Replacing Our Front Door - The Exterior Update You’ve Been Waiting For!

After sharing our exterior makeover over the last few months on IG stories, I know many of you have been patiently waiting for this detailed blog post and I am so excited to finally share our front door transformation!

In terms of curb appeal, our house looks so much more inviting and I was floored to be able to update the existing 90s style door with something more appropriate for our 100-year-old colonial home. When we renovated our house, we used both interior and exterior doors by Simpson Door Co. The quality and customer service they offer is unmatched and I love to be able to customize my door choices — like I did here for our arched pocket door. Given our positive experience, I was so excited to be able to partner with Simpson Door Co. on this front door project. Here’s a reminder of what our old front door looked like:

Between the dents & dings, the dated half-moon window, and the peeling paint, the entire front entry situation had seen better days (circa 1996) and was desperate for a refresh. I knew I wanted to replace the door itself, but I also wanted to take advantage of the entire opening by taking out the sidelights and doing a large solid double door in an effort to match the scale of the house and create more privacy.

I think a-lot of people did not understand why we would want to take away natural light from our entryway and I get that, but if you look at our entire home, you’ll see we have two large french doors on either side of the front door that let in plenty of light. Moreover, we live in a very active neighborhood with little to no front yard separating the entryway from the sidewalk. Before we replaced the front door you could technically see all the way up our stairs from the front walkway — not ideal. By removing the sidelights and choosing a solid door, I created some much needed privacy in the heart of our home.

The New Front Doors:

After referencing my favorite architectural text book and doing a deep dive on Pinterest, I worked with Simpson to customize their door style #2175. All we did was remove the “mutt” (a vertical middle bar separating the panels) to create two balanced, three-panel doors reminiscent of old European homes.

We hired professionals to demo the existing door and to install the new ones which made the whole process extremely quick. It only took a day for both demo and installation!

The doors arrived primed and ready for paint and despite some last-minuete changes ( I was SO nervous to commit), I ultimatley decided to paint the door Farrow and Ball Pigeon. I love how the color changes from green to grey throughout the day as the light changes and it perfectly compliments the natural tones of our brick. Eventually we plan to also paint our shutters the same color.

To match the finishes throughout the rest of our house, I chose square hinges in a polished brass and picked out this gorgeous polished brass door hardware from Emtek . The finished result is an impressive, welcoming entryway that feels classic and perfectly to scale with the rest of the house.

heres the finished look:

Isn’t she just gorgeous?!

I have to say, I’m so happy with the way the new doors turned out! It’s so nice pulling into our driveway to see the beautiful front entry that our old home always deserved and our porch definitely feels more welcoming now. I also love that our neighbors can no longer see me going up and down the stairs in my robe every morning!

here’s a side by side so you can see the major difference:
