Before and After: Our Powder Room Reveal

I am thrilled to (finally) reveal our main-floor powder room that has quickly become one of my favorite projects that we have completed so far. We finished this space a few months ago but with a new baby around I just recently got around to taking some photos for an official reveal!

The Before

The original powder room was the size of a tiny pantry and painted a color that can only be described as “pepto bismol pink.” When we renovated our home, we moved the location of the powder room to create a central hallway on the main floor and make room for our kitchen. Check out a “before tour” of our home here. As a result we were able to make the new bathroom footprint slightly larger than the original one.

The After

I went back and forth on whether I wanted to use wallpaper in this room but because I plan on using wallpaper in a few other places on the main floor, I decided to do vertical shiplap on the walls and ceiling for texture instead of pattern.

There are no windows so I embraced the dark moodiness and painted the walls a creamy taupe shade called Flatiron from Clare Paint. We used baseboards and crown moulding to finish the edges of the room for an extra element of drama.

I was super inspired by @ChrislovesJulia’s black and white penny tile floors and thought the classic french-bistro pattern would be perfect for the space. You can find the black penny tile we used here and the white penny tile here. We could have easily extended our wood floors into this room about I think the statement tile makes the room.

I shared a lot of powder room progress updates on my Instagram stories and despite some skepticism, I switched out the toilet seat for a walnut one — I couldn’t love it more! The wood tone adds so much warmth to the room and compliments all of the the brass finishes so well.

Now for the sink! This Kohler memoirs console sink was one of the first things we bought for the house almost two years ago now. The console style makes the room feel more breathable and it also doubles as a towel bar! I finished the space off with a matching faucet I found on eBay, a vintage mirror I’ve had laying around forever and an industrial-style wall sconce that plays off all the other traditional details in the powder room.

I wanted to let the bathroom finishes speak for themselves so I kept the styling simple: a sweet-smelling candle and bird print by the toilet and by the sink, an antique silver cup for fresh cut flowers and a striped hand-towel. You can find all the powder room sources below!
