The Library Project: A Floor-Plan & Moodboard

I am so excited to share the “official” plans for the library project I am working on over at my parents house. As a huge reader myself, getting to design an entire room dedicated to books is definitely a dream come true. Plus, this project is extra special because it’s going to be used and loved by my very best friend - my Mom! I previously helped them out with their bathroom design a few months back - check out the moodboards here.

Here’s a picture of where we’re at currently:

So far, we have switched out the existing light fixtures with these gorgeous brass pendants and installed this massive built-in cabinetry. We designed the cabinetry with my mom’s large book collection in mind, using lots of shelves for displaying books and adding some drawers in the center for visual interest and extra storage. The entire built-in is painted Benjamin Moore Hale Navy - my new favorite color!

The plan moving forward is to paint the rest of the trim and window casings Benjamin Moore Hale Navy and then install a floral wallpaper on the walls. Painting all the trim the same color as the cabinetry will make it feel like the built-in wraps around the entire room, creating a super cozy, inviting space.

ready for the floor-plan?

The library is a very long and narrow room so I decided to split the room into two furniture groupings based on function. The first grouping is a 36” bistro table with four dining chairs that can serve as a puzzle table, a place to enjoy a morning coffee, or a chic workspace without feeling too much like an office.

The second grouping includes a sofa, two cozy swivel chairs, an ottoman, and a few side tables — a perfect arrangement for propping up your feet and settling in with a good book!

I’m going to be honest I had a LOT of fun sourcing furniture for this room.

My mom fell in love with this floral wallpaper from Morris & Co. so I used that as my starting point and designed the room around that. For the seating area I chose this leather tufted sofa because I loved the warm caramel color of the leather and felt it gave off classic “library vibes.” The cream upholstered swivel chairs and woven seagrass ottoman are cozy and perfectly complement the sofa. I had to use this pretty velvet lumbar pillow to highlight the red berries of the wallpaper — I mean how cute?!

I’ve been waiting for a chance to incorporate a marble bistro table like this one and the library was the perfect opportunity! I love how the modern cane chairs play off the french-inspired bistro table for a sophisticated, timeless look. I may or may not make excuses to go over and work from this setup because it is just SO gorgeous.

The walls are being painted and papered in the next few weeks and now that the plans are in place we’ll start ordering furniture and putting it all together!

What do we think?!
