Our Hallway Makeover + 15 Boob Light Upgrades
Our upstairs hallway has come a long way from the forlorn buttercup corridor it used to be (the power of paint never ceases to amaze me!!) and I realized I have not been very good at sharing the updates. The biggest and most rewarding challenge was giving the hallway the makeover it deserved, while preserving the original elements that made us fall in love with the house in the first place.
To begin, let’s take a little trip back in time to our hallway one year ago:
The photo above is one I quickly snapped in the middle of our renovation while running through the new lighting plan with our electrician. You can see how the existing lighting setup combined with the ketchup and mustard color palette made this space feel a bit busy and cramped.
Flash forward to today and our hallway feels like a breath of fresh air! How many changes can you count from this angle?
Our hallway makeover started with ripping out the dusty old runner and replacing the floors with engineered french oak floors. We also added crown moulding to draw the eye upwards, replaced all the existing trim to match the downstairs, and painted everything in Benjamin Moore White Dove to achieve that “light and airy” feel that only really great white paint can do .
To fix the busy lighting, we ripped out the random boob light and replaced the pendant with this industrial flush-mount. I also added a few brass sconces along the hallway for extra ambience.
After those major changes the hallway went from feeling claustrophobic to feeling almost TOO airy (I didn’t think that was possible). So I decided to take a risk and paint all the hallway doors Benjamin Moore Soot.
It was like everything clicked! The warm black doors added the depth our hallway desperately needed and anchored my whole design.
Post makeover, I cannot stress the major effects of lighting enough. Upgrading fixtures to ones that reflect your personality and design style is an easy way to have a major impact on your home . If you have been holding out on switching those old boob lights - here’s your sign to do it now! I rounded up a bunch of awesome boob light upgrades below.
I am SO thankful that instead of yellow paint and boob lights, I can now appreciate the original features of our home that I love - the original arched window and the 100 year old railing that both tell a story!
